Our Santa Fe Adventure begins at the Albuquerque International Airport. Please schedule your arrival in Albuquerque between the hours of 12 noon and 3 p.m. Once on the ground, look for the McCall's Quilting Adventures representative in the baggage area. It takes approximately 1 hour by coach for the transfer to Santa Fe.
Check in to the beautiful Inn on the Alameda, considered by Travel & Leisure magazine as one of the top hotels in the world.
Early this evening the famous13 Moons Gallery will host a Welcome Reception for our group, and feature a special presentation of quilts, and textiles. We will also meet with some of the local quilters whose studios we will be visiting over the next few days.
Day 2 - Friday, May 7th Santa Fe (B,L)
Following breakfast in our hotel, we set out this morning to tour the studio of world renowned fiber artist Katy Pasquini. Her quilt "Rio Hondo" was selected for inclusion in the 100 Quilts of the 20th Century. Her style has changed over the years, but her passion for quilting has not.
Also today we will stop at Santa Fe's most important textile museums; Folk Art, Spanish Colonial Arts and Indian Arts and Culture. It is vital to understand the history of weaving and textiles in this region and these museums add texture to our visit.
Tonight, you are on your own for dinner and our staff will assist with reservations at one of the city's many signature restaurants.
Day 3 - Saturday, May 8th Taos (B, L)
We are up early for breakfast, and then off for Taos. There are many reasons New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment. Taos comes closest to fulfilling that moniker. It is home to stunning adobe architecture and an abundance of world famous writers and artists, one of whom we visit today, Terrie Mangat, an the internationally acclaimed textile artist who calls Taos home. Her "Dashboard Saints: In Memory of Saint Christopher, Who Lost His Magnetism" is also on the list of top 100 Quilts. We will visit her studio, and hear about her latest projects.
There's time to stroll the shops of Taos, and enjoy lunch with your new friends. In early afternoon we will visit the Pueblo of Taos, the only living Native American community designated by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark. The multi-storied buildings have been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years. Late this afternoon, we return to Santa Fe and our hotel.
Day 4 - Sunday, May 9th Chimayo (B,L)
The area around Santa Fe is rich in weaving tradition, and this morning after breakfast we set off for the historical community of Chimayo, just north of Santa Fe. Weaving has always been an important tradition at Chimayo, where commercial looms date back to the early 1900's. Today, the area is known for high quality, hand woven goods including the weaving of the Ortega and Trujillo families.
Lunch will be at the historic Rancho de Chimayo. Following lunch we will drive back to Santa Fe where you will have time to enjoy shopping and strolling the plaza.
Tonight we will host a Farewell Reception for the group and assist you with dinner reservations at one of the city's restaurants.
Day 5 - Monday, May 10th Santa Fe - Albuquerque (B)
This morning we enjoy our final breakfast together and then check out of our hotel. We're headed off for the Turquoise Trail, linking Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Along the 65 miles of highway we will stop to visit local shops and quilters. We have saved many of the areas best known quilting artists for our final day in New Mexico.
Our trip south will end at the Albuquerque International Airport at 1:00 p.m. Please book all outbound flights after 3:00 p.m. local time, to allow time to check-in and lunch in the departure area.
