Itinerary

Day 1 - Depart Miami
Our group flight departs Miami early afternoon. We arrive in Lima late evening and transfer to our hotel. Overnight Lima (D on board) (Overnight Hotel El Pardo - 2 nights)

This morning enjoy a guided city sightseeing tour through Lima's historical center, Plaza San Martin, Plaza Mayor, the Government Palace, the City Hall, the Cathedral and its Religious Art Museum. In the afternoon enjoy a visit to the Amano Museum, a unique private collection of cotton fabrics, mainly from the coastal Valley of Chancay. This collection contains a wide variety of weaving styles. A visit to this museum is by invitation only.

Tonight enjoy a festive Welcome Dinner in Lima. (B,D)

Day 3 - Cusco (B, D)
travel for quiltersFollowing breakfast at our hotel, we will transfer to the airport to board our flight to Cuzco.Upon arrival transfer to your hotel we suggest rest in the hotel in order to avoid altitude sickness. Lunch is on your own. In the late afternoon we will set off on a guided sightseeing tour of Cusco, visiting the Main Square, the Cathedral and the Temple of the Sun. Time permitting we will also visit the Inca sites near Cusco and the Pre-Columbian Art Museum. This evening we will be guests at the Tunupa Restaurant for a traditional meal and folkloric show.

travel for quiltersDay 4 - Sacred Valley (B )
It is a full-day excursion to the "Sacred Valley of the Incas", along the Vilcanota River, where we will have the opportunity to observe closely the local weaving and textile traditions.

Our day includes Awanakancha (name in Quechua which means "Knitting Palace") where you can admire the beauty of the Peruvian Andes in the traditional knitting techniques (tinting process, threading, warping and weaving) and the modern one, including the materials used, woven by locals

travel for quiltersToday there are still about 25 local craftsmen working at home, turning out the all-wool, hand-woven fabric that is treasured throughout the world. Late this afternoon we return to our hotel.

Day 5 - Sacred Valley (B, L)
Today is market day and we will have a chance to visit the lively market at Chinceros. Later, we will have meet a local artist Nilda Callanaupaat, for a private weaving demonstration Lunch today will be at the restaurant Tunupa. We will conclude the day with a visit to the Inca ruins at Ollantaytambo. You are free tonight to dine on your own with friends. (B,L)

travel for quiltersOctober 6 - Machu Picchu (B, L)
The day starts with an early morning transfer to the Train Station for an amazing train journey to the famous Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu, also known as "The Lost City of the Incas." Arrive at Aguas Calientes Station followed by a 30-minute bus drive, climbing 6km of winding road, to the incredible Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, we'll participate in a guided tour of the Citadel, visiting the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows and various burial grounds. After the tour you will have time to stroll around the archaeological site at your leisure. Lunch at Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge.

In the afternoon, board the train back to Cusco, and transfer to your hotel for overnight. Dinner on your own. Overnight in Cusco

travel for quiltersDay 7 Cusco - to Lima (B, D)
Following breakfast if you are heading home today, we will transfer to the airport and board our flight to Lima. Back in the capital city we will arrange day rooms for your convenience. You have this afternoon free to enjoy last minute shopping in Lima, or to simply relax.

This evening we will enjoy a fabulous farewell dinner at La Huaca Pucllana Restaurant, one of Lima's best restaurants. It is located in an unparalleled setting, within the compound of 1,500-year-old construction of an adobe pyramid built by the original inhabitants of Lima, the pre-Inca Lima Culture is one of the city's greatest dining surprises, a remarkable place to have Novo Andean Cuisine experience, a fusion of Andean ingredients and European. In late evening we transfer to the airport in time to board our international departure flight. Assistance with all departure formalities.


EXTENSION

travel for quiltersDay 7 Amazon Extension - Cusco to Puerto Maldonado (B, L, D)
For the group going to the Amazon region, after breakfast we transfer to the airport and board our flight to Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival we visit the Puerto Maldonado city market and then continue to the city's riverport where we embark on a 45-minute cruise downriver in outboard handmade motorboat. Along the river one may see caimans (alligators), birds, flowering trees, etc., native to the region. Upon arival at the lodge there will be an orientation about the lodge and facilities, built entirely by local indigenous people with forest materials. After being shown to your cabin, lunch in the panoramic dining room.In the afternoon, enjoy a two-hour guided walk on the botanical trail beside the lodge, explanation of the exuberant flora and fauna. Later in the day depart on an excursion to Monkey Island where one can observe up to five species of monkeys. At night stroll along the riverbank to observe baby caimans (alligators) and other nocturnal animals. Dinner this evening in the Lodge Dining room.

Day 8 - Amazon Extension - Puerto Maldonado (B, L, D)
travel for quiltersThe morning begins with a buffet-style tropical breakfast in the dining room. Then we depart on a 20-minute crossing by motor boat on the Madre de Dios. Next it is a one hour leisurely walk through the tropical forest. At the end of the path, magnificent Lake SANDOVAL. This lake offers extraordinary scenery of placid waters surrounded by palm, aguaje and other primary forest trees. During the journey one can observe the local rich flora and fauna of the place: river otters, caimans (alligators) turtles and rare Amazonian birds, like the hoatzin or "Shansho" (a prehistoric-looking bird, Opithocamus hoazin or stinkbird)), parrots, black skimmers and herons, among others. Your have the possibility of swimming in the lake. Return to Madre de Dios River after a short trip on the river it is a 5 minute walk in the wet forest through plantings of cacao rubber and breadfruit trees, coffee bushes and other plants to discover the famous boat Fitzcarraldo, run aground many years ago and covered with vegetation. This paddlewheel steam boat was used in the past as hospital to assist indigenous communities in the late seventies, it inspired the Cannes award winning film Fizcarraldo. Return to the lodge by boat. Lunch in the panoramic Amazon Pabillion. Time out for a nap. This afternoon we visit an indigenous cultivation plot where one can observe the style of life of the local community and different kinds of Amazonian crops. Return to the lodge at sunset, the ideal light to take spectacular photos. Dinner in the Lodge

Following breakfast we travel to the airport and a late morning departure to Lima. Upon arrival we will transfer to a hotel where day rooms will be available. This afternoon will be free to enjoy last minute shopping in Lima, or to simply relax. This evening we will enjoy a fabulous farewell dinner at La Huaca Pucllana Restaurant, one of Lima's best restaurants.
